Safe Space Training offered at KU

The KU GLBTQ Resource Center offers accredited Safe Space training to students, faculty and student staff. The training is accredited by the official Safe Space organization.

According to their website, Safe Space’s goal, “is to support, educate and help young people advocate for better mental health services throughout their local schools and community.” Their advisory board is trained to work with schools to customize programs to their needs.

That is what they’ve done at KU.

The Safe Space training at KU offers training in sensitive issues involving people at risk. The university and the center recognize that some people in the lgbt+ community are often misunderstand, so the training focuses around how to speak about these issues in an open and inoffensive way.

To encourage students, who may not otherwise speak out, to come forward with their issues because of fear of judgment or discrimination, trained Safe Space advocates are given official Safe Space stickers to place on their office or dormitory doors.

To set up a group or individual Safe Space training session, visit the KU GLBTQ Resource Center’s office or website.
